What are Aircraft Starters?
A modern aircraft starter consists of a high torque electric motor, reduction gearing and a means of automatically engaging and disengaging from the engine. The most common type of starter used on light and medium aircraft engines uses a wound electric motor and an engagement system, such as a bendix drive. The reduction gear ratio allows for the starter to turn many times faster than the aircraft engine and produce the high torque required to crank the engine.
